Removing the Carpet From Our Hatteras Pilothouse Stairs (Ep. 1)

Why would anyone put carpet on yacht stairs? We pulled it out of the pilothouse on our 30-year-old Hatteras, brought the original wood back, and added clear grip strips so it's just as safe, without the gross carpet. Next up: the rest of the interior woodwork, the pilothouse lights, and getting Starlink mounted before we move aboard.

What we did

  • Pulled the carpet off the pilothouse stairs. After 30 years of traffic the area was worn, and the stairs had the same carpet we’ve been tearing out everywhere else.
  • Brought the original wood back and finished it with a lot of layers of protection, so it holds up to heavy traffic.
  • Added clear grip strips so the stairs are just as safe as they were with carpet.

Why the carpet had to go

The carpet was there for grip, and on a boat that’s a fair reason. But this is the busiest part of Empire: whenever we’re underway, everyone heads up these stairs for the best view on the boat. They get wet feet and the occasional salt spray. Clear grip strips give the traction without carpet soaking that up.

Thanks

  • Zach, who helps us with the most detailed projects. This one blew our minds.

Still to do

  • Put the pilothouse lights back.
  • Refinish the rest of the interior wood with Zach, probably with less gloss than the stairs.
  • Mount the Starlink that’s been waiting about a year. It’s a hard requirement before we move aboard. Our Verizon hotspot is fine for occasional work on the boat, but not for living, streaming and working full-time aboard.

Why would anyone put carpet here?

Why you would put carpet over stairs like this is beyond me.

The pilothouse project

Uh so my second favorite room in the boat is the pilothouse here. It's pretty amazing. Um another project that we have going on is restoring and revarnishing the stairs in this entire area. This is a heavily trafficked area because anytime the boat's underway, anytime the boat's moving and we have people on the boat, everybody migrates outside up there because it just has the best view ever. Um, so over 30 years, this area here had become worn. Um, some

The carpeted stairs

of that gross carpet that Trish mentioned was on these stairs. Uh, why you would put carpet over stairs like this is beyond me. Well, for safety purposes, safety reasons. That's why they put carpet there. Well, what we're going to do is we brought the wood back, finished it, and we have some clear strips on here that

Bringing the wood back

provide grip, so it's equally safe. Um, for me personally, I don't see why you would put carpet going to an area that's upstairs where people are going to be wet. You know, occasionally salt water gets up there, all that kind of stuff. Spray. Um, so one of the people that helps us out a great deal with these projects, um, especially very detailed

Shoutout to Zach

projects like this is Zach. And he did a crazy good job. Um, just phenomenally detail-oriented guy. And it blew our minds. So this whole area is done. This is done. We still got to put the lights back. Uh, one of the mistakes though

What's next for the woodwork

when you do something like this is you see how awesome it looks, how new it looks, how shiny it looks, just how great it looks is now you have all the rest of the wood on the boat and you can't I have a hard time leaving something old and not finished next to something finished. So, uh, one of the projects that Zach, Trish, and I are going to be collaborating on is doing the rest of the wood on the boat. Um maybe not with a super high gloss like this. Um this has a lot of protectant and a lot of layers on it to keep it um looking good with high traffic, but um that's the pilothouse. And if you look over here, one of the things that I'm

Starlink before we move aboard

really excited about getting, it's been sitting here for about a year, is we got our Starlink and we're going to mount it on top. Um before we live on the boat, that is a hard requirement. We have a little Verizon hotspot that works and it's great for doing occasional work on the boat, but for living on the boat, streaming, doing the kind of work that I do and Trish does, it's just not practical.
